Simple Ways to Improve Your Tap Water

There are some really simple things you can do to reduce the pollutants in our tap water. They require no special equipment and they will definitely help improve the quality of the water you are drinking.

1). Let your faucet run for at least twenty seconds in order to drain any sediment left in the pipes where the water has been setting. By draining the water in the pipes you have less of a chance of picking up any of residue that has settled in the water lying in the pipes. This also allows for any sediment that is loosened when the water is turned on and the water pressure increases in the pipes. The increase in water pressure may loosen the pollutants contained in the pipes and it always best to drain those pipes from any existing standing water.

2). Boil your water. Boiling you water for at least 10 minutes is a great way to disinfect it. Boiling also removes any remaining chlorine and other volatile pollutants in the water. You want to boil your water long enough to reduce the pollutants but not long enough to reduce the water amount to have the remaining sediment become concentrated. The normal recommended amount of time is ten minutes. Also water should be boiled in stainless steel, glass or porcelain pots as these are the safest materials.

3). Allow your tap water to breathe. Filling a wide mouth pot full of water and letting sit out in the open will allow for most of the chlorine to dissipate into the atmosphere. Water coming from your public supply will have residual chlorine from the treatment process and letting it breathe in the normal atmosphere will help rid the water of any remaining chemical.

4) Stir up you water in the blender. If you pour your tap water into the blender and stir it up, with the cover off you will also help any remaining chemicals dissipate into the atmosphere. The stirring process allows for evaporation to take place and quickly reduces the chemical concentration of the water. When using this method it is important to remember two things. First, when using the blender set it on the lowest possible speed other wise you will have water splattered all over the place and second remember to have the lid off of the blender. You want the chlorine and other chemicals to evaporate and the only way to do this is to have the lid off. With the lid on you are trapping the chemicals in the container with the water.

Finally remember to refrigerate any water that is processed using the above methods. These methods reduce the volatile chemicals in the water but water left in warm rooms or in open spaces becomes a host to many unpleasant microorganisms. All water should be refrigerated and used as promptly as possible in order to obtain the freshest and healthiest level possible.
